I love the idea of this book, but I had a difficult time getting invested in the characters because the alternating chapters felt too disconnected。

The audio narration is very good as well。 I received an audio review copy of this book via NetGalley。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

The interconnection between us and a spiritual self。 The impact the climate crisis not only has on nature and animals but also us and how we fit into this new changing world that's intrinsically intertwined with every part of our being。 The importance of elders and the wisdom they have in our lives。 And lastly the found family of humans, animal people, animals, and spirits。 The two narrators did a beautiful job of not only bring Nina and Aoki to life, but the whole ensemble cast as well。 The only downside to this book was a slow start and that by the end I really wish this book was just a wee bit longer with a little bit more of a concrete ending to Nina's story。4。75 almost perfect stars Thank you NetGalley and RB Media for this Audioarc in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

While the Lipan Apache lore was new and interesting, I couldn't help but feel bored by the overall plot。 It felt like it was about nothing for the first 50% of the book, and then for the remaining 50% it was about what felt like ten things at once。 Lots of plot points were left unsaid and then mentioned later on as if we were supposed to know what had happened。 Non the less, I think this could be a good book to introduce younger readers to the young adult fantasy genre。 While the Lipan Apache lore was new and interesting, I couldn't help but feel bored by the overall plot。 It felt like it was about nothing for the first 50% of the book, and then for the remaining 50% it was about what felt like ten things at once。 Lots of plot points were left unsaid and then mentioned later on as if we were supposed to know what had happened。 Non the less, I think this could be a good book to introduce younger readers to the young adult fantasy genre。 。。。more

This is one of those books that you don't really know what's completely going on until the end of it。 It's a book about storytelling at its core, and let me tell you, Darcie Little Badger is a master at it。 Before diving in, know that the format is based in Lipan Apache storytelling structure, so it unfolds differently than you're probably used to in Western books。 But, once you get to the ending, it is totally worth it。At the core, we have two different narratives: Nina, a Lipan girl based in o This is one of those books that you don't really know what's completely going on until the end of it。 It's a book about storytelling at its core, and let me tell you, Darcie Little Badger is a master at it。 Before diving in, know that the format is based in Lipan Apache storytelling structure, so it unfolds differently than you're probably used to in Western books。 But, once you get to the ending, it is totally worth it。At the core, we have two different narratives: Nina, a Lipan girl based in our world and obsessed with stories, and Oli, a cottonmouth kid who is from the land of spirits。 At first, it's unclear what the two stories have to do with each other, but by the end, you learn how they are connected。 Infused with magic and mythology, this book isn'te quite like any other book I've ever read。 It might not be for everyone, but I recommend spending time with it, as it's a gem of a book that absolutely has a place in the realm of YA literature。 。。。more

A Snake Falls to Earth is the story of Oli, an animal person - Cottonmouth specifically, and Nina, a Lipan Apache。 When these two are thrown together, they must work together to help Oli's friend。I think indigenous authors are probably the most underrepresented group in all of mainstream fiction。 Because of that, and because I'm trying to read as many books by BIPOC authors as possible, I was happy to see this title come across my feed。I LOVED this story。 The characters are rich and beautiful。 O A Snake Falls to Earth is the story of Oli, an animal person - Cottonmouth specifically, and Nina, a Lipan Apache。 When these two are thrown together, they must work together to help Oli's friend。I think indigenous authors are probably the most underrepresented group in all of mainstream fiction。 Because of that, and because I'm trying to read as many books by BIPOC authors as possible, I was happy to see this title come across my feed。I LOVED this story。 The characters are rich and beautiful。 Oli and Ami were my favorites, but I especially loved Ami。 (Even though he's not in the story very much, he's such a colorful character。) The other characters, Risk and Rain and Nina were super interesting and so unique。 The story was super cute and had me smiling many times。I listened to the audiobook, and Shaun Taylor-Corbett and Kinsale Hueston were awesome narrators。 If you're thinking about reading this, I definitely recommend the audiobook。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ALC。 。。。more

The premise of this book is fascinating。 I'm a sucker for stories about storytelling, and this book is all about that。 The whole parallel worlds and animal people stories? Love it。 I was disoriented at times, but it was good to be disorienting-- kind of fun to figure out what was going on。 My only disappointment was the ending。 I felt like too many loose ends remained, like it was almost setting up for a second book, but not quite。 The premise of this book is fascinating。 I'm a sucker for stories about storytelling, and this book is all about that。 The whole parallel worlds and animal people stories? What is the point? This feels like a story you start writing with a vague idea of a concept and then just keep going until something big enough happens to end it, without ever hitting any kind of arc。 Maybe I'm missing something- which is definitely possible, due to the whole experience of reading this book being infuriating and hard to focus on- but as the main "plot" didn't even start until nearly 70% of the way through and not much happens before that, particularly with Nina, I just don't understand where this book was trying to go。The biggest reason for a bad reading experience was the fact that I read a DRC and it had no breaks at all between POV, instead it ran directly into each portion, usually midword, making it really confusing to follow。 But even without that the whole nonlinear POV switching when the characters had no impact on each other felt so unnecessary for so much of the book。 In the end, obviously, thy come together, but the strange way they're tied together for most of the book made the flow constantly break and only made me less invested。 Plus, the whole story was slow, which I was going to call a pacing issue, but, again, I truly do not understand what the actual plot was so I think that's the bigger issue。This book feels really lopsided, I had no connection to Nina's part of the story- it doesn't help that most of her portions were made up of time skips- and this book felt like an experimental middlegrade read to me, instead of a YA。I, personally, didn't like this book, but I appreciate it for its connection to Lipan culture and for bringing more Native voices to publishing。 I'm sure someone else will love this, but I'm not the audience。 。。。more

But I still was suprised at how consistently strange and wonderful it was。The characters were truly the highlight of 'A Snake Falls to Earth'。 One thing to know is that it is written as a dual perspective。 One perspective follows teenage Nina, a Lipan Apache girl living in the world we know as Earth, who has noticed strange things about the land in Texas that her ailing Grandmother lives on。 Nina is a storyteller, and her sections were delightful to read。 The other narrator is Oli, a cottonmouth snake who lives in the spirit realm。 Oli's chapters are for sure more odd than Nina's, so it takes some getting used to, but I ended up loving the creativity and unique nature of his character。The story is so unlike anything I have ever read! I loved it so much。 Again, it took a while to get fully into, but I was hooked as soon as I made time to sit down and read it。 It's always really interesting to read dual-perspective novels when the two storylines intersect。 Once Oli and Nina's stories started to blend into one narrative, it became a very surreal reading experience where I was completely immersed in this new world。 The writing is SO good。 I can totally understand why the author has won prizes for her writing。 It's not just enjoyable, it practically flows off the page。 It feels like a gift, it's honestly such a special thing to read。 It has a folklore feel to it, because of the magical elements, specifically the spirit and shapeshifting parts。 My final thoughts are completely positive。 I'm really glad I read this, and I'm excited to read anything Darcie Little Badger writes in the future! Like Elatsoe, this was so refreshing! It wasn’t wasn’t linear, it wasn’t trope-y。 Equal time on the page was spent in both our own world and the reflected world。 Equal personhood was attributed to humans and non-human creatures。 The writing and dialogue were sly but earnest in tone, and super clever if you pay close enough attention。
